Denver Lift-Off ... a Rocket Pool Convention

Denver Lift-Off … a Rocket Pool Convention

This is an initial post about an idea to have the pDAO (perhaps with financial support from the Dev Team) host a community learning forum, as described below. This post is to gauge interest and thoughts from the community members regarding this idea.

Description:
The Denver Lift-Off is envisioned to be a 1.5-day conference focusing on the Rocket Pool protocol, running parallel to the ETH Denver festival. It’s primarily an educational event offering members of the Rocket Pool community an opportunity to learn from fellow node operators, pDAO members, community leaders, and the development team. Although centered around topics that are of interest to the Rocket Pool community, the content will likely appeal to those interested in decentralized, permissionless LST protocols and ETH staking in general.

The format for the 1.5-day event includes two concurrent tracks on Day 1 followed by moderated community discussion sessions on Day 2. For Day 1, the workshop track is designed for new or curious node operators, while the second learning forum is suited for individuals already engaged in the Rocket Pool ecosystem.

The Workshop track is structured as a comprehensive new node operator workshop, guiding attendees through the fundamental concepts of Ethereum staking, introducing the Rocket Pool smart stack software, and assisting the attendees in building a node from scratch or using a hosted VPS service. These “hands-on” sessions aim to equip participants with the skills to operate an Ethereum node using the Rocket Pool Smart stack.

The Forum track, targeting intermediate to advanced participants, will feature presentations from knowledgeable development team members and community experts. Presenters, including Rocket Scientists and other Rocket Pool specialists, will receive a small stipend to help cover their travel expenses to ETH Denver. Members of the Dev team will also deliver highly technical briefing of current and future design work.

Possible Forum Topics:

  • GMC - Functions
  • IMC - Functions
  • Smart Node 2.0 Design and specification
  • GUI Interface for Rocket Pool
  • Review of Houston upgrade
  • RP Smart contact design
  • Mega Pool Design
  • Saturn Upgrade Feature Inclusion - Group Discussion
  • DVT opportunities for RP integration
  • Community Projects: Rescue Node

Day 2 of the event will be a half-day intended for committed members of the community who wish to participate in a series of facilitated envisioning and discussion sessions. These sessions will discuss in depth current topics and challenges within the Rocket Pool ecosystem. The goal is to develop a better understanding and generate design ideas to advance and improve the Rocket Pool community. Topics may include tokenomic design, megapool features, commission rates and more.

Tentative Agenda
Please see this >>>LINK<<< to a google document that include some tentative agenda.

Day 2 Agenda

Location:
The event will take place in the metropolitan Denver area, focusing on geographical accessibility for individuals attending the ETH Denver Festival. Additionally, we will livestream the presentations from the Forum event. Moderators will compile a set of proceedings that reflect the outcomes of the strategic planning workshops. Presentations from the New Node Operator workshop may also be recorded for online distribution as part of future educational opportunities for new operators.

Catering at the event includes light refreshments in the morning, lunch, and afternoon snacks.

Attendee Costs:
A nominal fee ($20) will be charged to attendees to minimize no-shows, ensuring a committed and engaged audience.

Preliminary Budget
A preliminary budget >>>LINK<<< is under development and is a work in progress. If community sentiment is positive for the event a more refined model can be developed.

As starters it would be helpful to hear from many in the community answers to the following questions:

  1. Interest Level:
  • How interested are you in attending the Denver Lift-Off?
  • If you will not be attending ETH Denver (24) in person, would you prefer to participate in person or via the livestream option?

  1. Community Engagement:
  • What are your thoughts on the planned Day 2 community discussion sessions? Are there specific topics or challenges within the Rocket Pool ecosystem you would like to see addressed?
  • How can we encourage active participation and engagement during the event?
  • Do you have any suggestions for improving the accessibility and inclusivity of the event?
  1. Budget and Costs:
  • What are your thoughts on the nominal attendance fee ($20)?
  • Do you have suggestions for managing or optimizing the budget for this event?
  1. Potential Outcomes and Follow-up:
  • What outcomes or follow-up actions would you like to see resulting from the convention?
  • Do you have any other suggestions or concerns regarding the event’s format, content, or organization?

Awesome idea! 2024 will be my first ETHDenver if I get a ticket. Will be coming over from Germany and would be more than happy to join the Rocket Pool event for the Learning Forum and networking.

I’d be most interested in the technical presentations (Smart Node 2.0, Houston Upgrade, Smart contract/Megapool design). For the 2nd day I think discussions particularly regarding tokenomics would be valuable. Maybe we should allow for a bit more time to do networking and even think about a gathering at a local pub in the evening after day 1.

Regading costs - I have no idea how expensive the rent for an appropriate event location would be, but I would suggest that the attendance fee should ideally cover the rental costs.

This looks awesome Ken.

How interested are you in attending the Denver Lift-Off?
Very interested. I kind of just camped out at the booth last time, and would really enjoy some structured Rocket Pool events and discussion to break up the day.

What specific topics or sessions would you be most interested in?
Governance, protocol roadmap, competitive landscape, etc.

Are the proposed tracks (Workshop for new node operators and Forum for experienced participants) aligned with your expectations and needs?
Yes, I think this is a great way to handle both audiences.

What are your thoughts on the planned Day 2 community discussion sessions? Are there specific topics or challenges within the Rocket Pool ecosystem you would like to see addressed?
Mainly tokenomics and competition.

How can we encourage active participation and engagement during the event?
POAPs, swag, engaging Discord in some way

What are your thoughts on the nominal attendance fee ($20)?
I have no strong feelings if this is the best method for commitment but I agree something should be in place.

Do you have suggestions for managing or optimizing the budget for this event?
Personally nothing right now, but I would encourage the community to start pitching ideas to the GMC if they come up with any ways to make the event better.

What outcomes or follow-up actions would you like to see resulting from the convention?
More interested NOs from the New NO track, and maybe some fresh protocol ideas that were developed from having everyone in one place in person.

Volunteer and Speaker Interest:
I’d like to speak about the GMC (I love public speaking), I’m also happy to volunteer with setup or any of the organizational elements.

Love this idea. When would we target doing something like this? Wouldn’t it be competing with ETH Denver conference timing? And if it does, I’d much prefer to go to this.

+1 adding a tax presentation or workshop to the schedule. Seems like perfect timing to have one.

  1. Interest Level:
  • How interested are you in attending the Denver Lift-Off?

100%

  • If you will not be attending ETH Denver (24) in person, would you prefer to participate in person or via the livestream option?

In person. But I am attending ETH Denver 2024.

  1. Content and Format:
  • What specific topics or sessions would you be most interested in?

Rocket Pool. Forum track. RocketProof and Verifereum. Other grants/bounties I have participated or will participate in.

  • Are the proposed tracks (Workshop for new node operators and Forum for experienced participants) aligned with your expectations and needs?

Sure. Idk.

  • How do you feel about the balance between educational and community discussion sessions?

No strong opinion.

  1. Community Engagement:
  • What are your thoughts on the planned Day 2 community discussion sessions? Are there specific topics or challenges within the Rocket Pool ecosystem you would like to see addressed?

I think we should have a Knoshua (and maybe Valdorff) suggestion session. Whether they are there or want to participate or not, curate their best ideas for improvement from Discord + forum and discuss in depth.

  • How can we encourage active participation and engagement during the event?

Organise it and make it easy for participants to attend and just show up without preparing.

  • Do you have any suggestions for improving the accessibility and inclusivity of the event?

Make the venue physically accessible. Make participation flexible/optional. Don’t clash with major other events. Have a code of conduct (that explicitly prohibits harassment and discrimination) and on-site moderators. Ensure a demographic diversity of speakers/panellists (if any). Have a range of experience-required levels (I think you already did this in the suggested tracks). Have a quiet space. Have childcare space. Ensure there is a range of dietary options to cater to any restrictions. Ensure any talks or presentations are captioned and/or signed, and recorded if the speaker agrees.

  1. Budget and Costs:
  • What are your thoughts on the nominal attendance fee ($20)?

Happy to pay this or more.

  • Do you have suggestions for managing or optimizing the budget for this event?

Have a treasurer if possible. Ask community members for donations for POAPs if needed.

  1. Potential Outcomes and Follow-up:
  • What outcomes or follow-up actions would you like to see resulting from the convention?

Outcomes: happier (and possibly larger) community of Rocket Poolers. Better protocol technicals, resulting from good discussions on how to make things better.

  • Do you have any other suggestions or concerns regarding the event’s format, content, or organization?
  1. Volunteer and Speaker Interest:
  • Would you be interested in volunteering for the event or participating as a speaker or presenter?

Maybe speaker, depending on the topic - e.g. the ones I listed as “interested in” above.

Very interested in the remote (live-stream) option.

If there could be a way that 10-20% of participants could attend for free by applying that could ensure the cost doesn’t limit the potential talent that could attend.

Great proposal, thanks for pushing this forward.

This is an INCREDIBLE idea! I love it!

-How interested are you in attending the Denver Lift-Off?
Extremely! The main reason I went to ETHDenver last year was to meet some fellow RocketPoolers

-If you will not be attending ETH Denver (24) in person, would you prefer to participate in person or via the livestream option?
In person

-Are the proposed tracks (Workshop for new node operators and Forum for experienced participants) aligned with your expectations and needs?
Absolutely… would love to attend BOTH if possible.

-How do you feel about the balance between educational and community discussion sessions?
Not actually sure… the hunch feels like it should be about 50/50, but I’m not basing that on anything.

-What are your thoughts on the planned Day 2 community discussion sessions? Are there specific topics or challenges within the Rocket Pool ecosystem you would like to see addressed?
Maybe some time for a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) discussion on the future of Rocket Pool. I also think a lot of NOs would love to learn the history of Rocket Pool. Waq’s interview with Darcius was awesome in this regard.

-How can we encourage active participation and engagement during the event?
Offer RPL raffles

-Do you have any suggestions for improving the accessibility and inclusivity of the event?
Post travel accommodations, shuttles, etc… maybe?

-What are your thoughts on the nominal attendance fee ($20)?
Extremely fair

-Do you have suggestions for managing or optimizing the budget for this event?
No

-What outcomes or follow-up actions would you like to see resulting from the convention?
Relationship building, camaraderie, and a lot of skills/knowledge building

-Do you have any other suggestions or concerns regarding the event’s format, content, or organization?
No.

-Would you be interested in volunteering for the event or participating as a speaker or presenter?
Yes!

  1. Interest Level :

Yes… going to EthDenver. Can’t wait!!

Interested in attending portions of this event.

  1. Content and Format :

· Education and community is perfect!

· Is there an option to attend part workshop part learning forum?

· Still $20 is so worth it for networking alone

  1. Community Engagement :

2 full days is a commitment; I suggest an in and out strategy to gain more people to “pop in” and get new users. Possibly have a community section to bring in more interest.

Did you reserve a booth or is there any budget for advertising?

What about a Rocketpool

mini pillow.
I have game ideas if you have a booth.

  1. Budget and Costs :

· $ 20 is very reasonable.

  1. Potential Outcomes and Follow-up :

· Onboarding of new node operators (especially females) ; I will be recruiting and speaking with women at the conference to bring more awareness.

· Creation of a Rocketpool Game during the conference would be super cool to onboard new interest.

  1. Volunteer and Speaker Interest :

· Yes, I would love to volunteer for 4-6 hrs on one of the days and then attend ½ of the workshop and forum.

· I don’t have enough experience yet to be a speaker or run the workshop. Ideally, community engagement would be a good fit for me, but I am open for any of the brunt work. Help set up, clean up, ect.

I have specific ideas what I need to learn more about, but I also want to attend some of the conference. I imagine that some will feel the same so having an in and out might be more favorable for some of the participants.

Could consider a time-limited POAP in the middle of two topic sessions each day, and reimbursing the entrance fee for anyone who has like 2 out of 4 POAPs. This may eliminate the no-show problem (and more importantly help gauge catering needed: 300 participants seems high to me), while acknowledging that RP is really the one benefitting from each person who shows up to participate. I think venue cost would be a good place for a grant application if there is a non-GMC member to write it, or alternatively could be crowd-funded from a charitable POAP from non-participants. I wonder if you could shorten the timeframe/costs by having two topics run concurrently, so participants could chose which one they were more engaged with, which would also be less drag away from the main ETH Denver events.
