Round 13 - GMC Call for Retrospective Applications - Deadline is June 7

This thread is for applications for Rocket Pool’s May 7, 2024 - June 7, 2024 retrospective awards. Please only post retrospective award applications in this thread. If you would like to discuss and/or ask questions about any applications you see in this thread, we ask that you do so in this separate forum thread which has been established for all community discussions related to this round of applications. Only those grant applications that are posted in this thread and timestamped by June 7, 2024 at 23:59 (11:59 PM) UTC will be considered. Any retrospective award applications posted after that deadline will be carried over to the next award period.

This is the expected schedule for round 13:

  • Application Period (May 7th - June 7th)
  • Negotiation Period (June 8th - June 24th)
  • Scoring Deadline (June 25th)
  • Final Voting Amendments, Discussion and Finalization (June 26th - June 29th)
  • Award Announcement (June 30th)

To guide you in your application, the GMC has established the following goals and the following scoring rubric:

GMC Goals

Grants, bounties, and retrospective awards should make it easier and/or more attractive to do one or more of the following:

  • become a node operator

  • operate a node, mint rETH

  • hold or use rETH

  • improve the quality of life for the protocol and its community.

Retrospective Award Rubric

To what extent did the proposed and completed project further the GMC goals?

Note: if the project is ongoing, the retrospective award is given for work completed prior to the current award period, with any future awards for the same project expected to compete in the Grants category and as a separate application.

Patches “optimistic” work prior to May 12

Who is the proposed retrospective award recipient?

@Patches

What specific project or work is the retrospective award in recognition of? Please detail what the project or work entailed and the duration over which it took place.

Prior to GA112405 going ‘active’ (2 weeks after approval, which comes out to May 12), and as mentioned in the grant application, I began logging hours for the work I was doing to directly support RP.

This RA pays for those hours at the same rate as the grant itself.

I worked on a handful of projects during that time:

  • Adding CI to smartnode repos (completed)
    • CI found existing bugs and prevents future bugs
    • ~ 13.25 hours
  • Fixed bug with vacant, scrubbed minipools:
    • PR 1 PR 2
    • Fixes a smartnode bug plaguing NOs with failed solo migrations
    • 1 hour
  • Improve v2 daemon task abstraction (ongoing)
    • In smartnode v2, the individual tasks executed by watchtower/node daemons intermingle business logic with low level task locking, and an abstraction can help reduce code complexity and repetitiveness
    • 2 hours
  • Create a kurtosis rocketpool-package
    • Would help us write “large tests” - tests are desperately needed to reduce manual testing burden on the team
    • Ongoing
    • 39 hours
  • Rewards Tree v9
    • A portion of the work on v9 began before May 12th
    • Benefits described in RPIP-52
    • ~3 hours

In total, 58 hours of work leading into May 12th.

A detailed breakdown is available on my public Coda: link

$5800

Is the applicant requesting RPL or LUSD?

LUSD

Conflict of Interest

Does the person or persons requesting the retrospective award have any conflicts of interest to disclose? (Please disclose here if you are a member of the GMC or if you have nominated a member of the GMC for this retrospective award).

Name of Retrospective Award

Tokenomics Rework Retro

Who is the proposed retrospective award recipient?

The community members that have spent a significant effort working on overhauling Rocket Pool’s tokenomics.

I am submitting three applications this period:

What specific project or work is the retrospective award in recognition of? Please detail what the project or work entailed and the duration over which it took place.

Rocket Pool’s tokenomics is in a state of turmoil. Community members have diligently spent hours researching and designing new systems to fix Rocket Pool’s core problems including RP’s node operator constraints.

Valdorff’s response for not submitting a retrospective application yet was:

I plan to submit later because I don’t want to put in the time to think it through now, not because I think that’s better.

There has been increasing talk from the community about rewarding these efforts, and to incentivize others to contribute to the work.

By compensating for the progress up until this point, the GMC can acknowledge the months of hard work contributed and resignal to the DAO that tokenomics is top priority.

Benefit

Group Benefits
Potential rETH holders A tokenomics rework would make Rocket Pool marketable again. rETH would give users the best decentralized option.
rETH holders The tokenomics goal is to ensure all offerings are competitive with other staking providers, including rETH.
Potential NOs A lot of node operators are turned off by the high RPL requirements. There are many ideas that could allow little to no RPL exposure.
NOs Tokenomics will lead to higher APR and much more options.
Community Community sentiment is very low, tokenomics is one of the only hopeful items left for some. The GMC backing these efforts is essential.
RPL holders All of the above benefits will lead to a higher RPL price.

Costs

How much USD $ is the applicant requesting be awarded to the recipient?

$80,000 - $100,000

With the treasury sitting at over $1M and arguably the most important year in the protocol’s future, GMC should be devoting as much resources as possible to the tokenomics rework.

Split will be determined by compiling peer review data. Top 10 members from Rocket Scrape data will be polled on their opinion of each other member’s contributions. If available, the content of the peer review questions will be verified by knoshua and LFW to ensure efficiency. Members with higher scores will receive higher splits proportionally.

Valdorff and knoshua, two major contributors to the tokenomics rework, reviewed the compensation systems (not the amounts) of these tokenomics applications (round 13) in the GMC Discord here.

Is the applicant requesting RPL or LUSD?

RPL

Conflict of Interest

Does the person or persons requesting the retrospective award have any conflicts of interest to disclose? (Please disclose here if you are a member of the GMC or if you have nominated a member of the GMC for this retrospective award).

I am the GMC administrator. I exclude myself from any compensation for tokenomics reworks.

Contract Verification with Guides

Are the subjects of this award entirely open source (MIT, GPL, Apache, CC BY license or similar)? If not, which parts will not be, why, and under what license will they be published?

Benefit

This benefits every participant in the protocol (rETH, NO, RPL holder) helping verify that the contracts in the repository (which are the audited contracts) are the same as the deployed contracts which would be voted in by the oDAO.

It also benefits oDAO members by providing a guide to doing appropriate diligence on the contract so that they don’t need to trust the team’s tools (or even peteris’ tools, as the guide walks through what’s being done quite clearly).

Costs

How much USD $ is the applicant requesting be awarded to the recipient?

I think $2000-2500 would be reasonable per verification, so $4000-5000 for the 2 verifications done so far.

I am requesting this on behalf of @peteris and have no relevant conflicts of interest.

May 2024 Support Hours

Who is the proposed retrospective award recipient?

Leighm.eth

What specific project or work is the retrospective award in recognition of? Please detail what the project or work entailed and the duration over which it took place.

(This should be my last Solo Retro, and am excited to use the new system going forward).
This grant is for recognition of work performed in the Rocket Pool Support channel, for the month of May 2024. My submitted hours are based on the results from the script haloooloolo has written.

As I said Last month, I wanted to make mention of how important I feel the level of support that the handful of us bring to the Rocket Pool support channel. I have seen countless times, how thankful a node operator is to not only have their issue resolved, but have it resolved quickly by community members who are genuinely attentive and competently work with the NO.

Based on the script output, I have accumulated 17 hours in support for the month of May (May 1st to May 31st). These hours only include work done in the support channel.

Benefit

Haloooloolo summarized it very well in previous grant applications.

Group Benefits
Potential rETH holders Prospective rETH holders visit the support / general channel for help with navigating the website or ask questions about the reward distribution mechanism.
rETH holders rETH holders benefit from the higher effectiveness of node operators that have been helped in support.
Potential NOs Potential NOs go to support to ask for hardware suggestions, ask about the Smartnode stack or ask other miscellaneous setup questions.
NOs This is the core group for support activity. Most requests involve node maintenance or actively ongoing issues that caused an operator’s node to go offline.
Community Having a strong support channel to rely on is one of the main reasons a potential node operator would join the Rocket Pool community.
RPL holders Mostly NA - indirectly by helping other members of the community and therefore the protocol. Some support requests are about the migration of RPL v1.

Notice: This message marks the closing of the thirteenth (13) round of Rocket Pool retrospective applications. Any applications submitted after this will not be considered for this round. The GMC will announce the award recipients in a new thread here on the forums around June 30th. The community will then have two weeks to issue any challenges before funds are disbursed. Thank you to all who applied and thank you to everyone who has followed along. Anyone who would like to comment on existing applications is encouraged to do so in this thread.
