Round 18 - GMC Call for Grant Applications - Deadline is November 7

This thread is for applications for Rocket Pool’s October 7, 2024 - November 7, 2024 grants. Please only post grant applications in this thread. If you would like to discuss and/or ask questions about any applications you see in this thread, we ask that you do so in this separate forum thread which has been established for all community discussions related to this round of applications. Only those grant applications that are posted in this thread and timestamped by November 7, 2024 at 23:59 (11:59 PM) UTC will be considered. Any grants posted after that deadline will be carried over to the next award period.

This is the expected schedule for round 18:

  • Application Period (October 7 - November 7)
  • Decision Deadline (November 19)
  • Final Voting Amendments, Discussion and Finalization (November 20 - November 23)
  • Award Announcement (November 24)
Differences Between Grants and Bounties Grants are intended to be applied for by those who are wishing to carry out the work themselves. Bounties are open-ended goals that could be met by anyone, including those other than the proposing party. In other words, if I believed that Rocket Pool needed a fifty-foot paper mache orange rocket for publicity purposes and I wanted to be the one to built it, I would apply for a grant. If I instead thought Rocket Pool needed a fifty-foot paper mache orange rocket for publicity purposes but I wanted it to be open to whoever built it first to claim the reward (similar to a prize), then I’d apply for a bounty.

To guide you in your application, the GMC has established the following goals and the following scoring rubric:

GMC Goals

Grants, bounties, and retrospective awards should make it easier and/or more attractive to do one or more of the following:

  • become a node operator

  • operate a node, mint rETH

  • hold or use rETH

  • improve the quality of life for the protocol and its community.

Grants Rubric

When evaluating grant applications, the GMC takes into account the following goals:

  • If the application is successful, to what extent does it further the GMC goals?

  • To what extent can the application be feasibly carried out by the person(s) proposed to complete it?

  • If the application is successful, how large is the benefit to the protocol relative to the size of the proposed costs

RPLDefi

What is the work being proposed?

Updating the Rocket Pool DeFi document (www.RPLdefi.com) with new market rates and opportunities bi-weekly. After the rates were updated, the information will then be shared on X and Discord. Keeping the sheet updated is the main goal of the work, however, the thread posted to X and crossposted on Discord create a record of the work and spread it to a further audience than the Google Doc itself can reach.

Is there any related work this builds off of?

This project has previously been completed on a retroactive reward basis and seeks to continue that work in the form of a grant. Not really a build off but more of a continuation.

Will the results of this project be entirely open source (MIT, GPL, Apache, CC BY license or similar)? If not, which parts will not be, why, and under what license will they be published?

Which other non-RPL protocols, DAOs, projects, or individuals, would stand to benefit from this grant?

Projects like Balancer, Uniswap, Pancakeswap, and others stand to gain from the traffic that may be generated to their projects by this work. However, this work is like Gas Buddy or a similar system that just aggregates benefits and those who are doing the best for the users will look the best. Essentially, yes it may benefit other projects but only in the way that it breeds competition and makes the projects make themselves better to compete with those doing well now.

Work

Who is doing the work?

regexbuster.eth

What is the background of the person(s) doing the work? What experience do they have with such projects in the past?

I’ve been the current maintainer of the Google Doc for the past few months and have been quite consistant about updating the sheet biweekly.

What is the breakdown of the proposed work, in terms of milestones and/or deadlines?

Biweekly there will be updated to the Google document, a post made to the StakeRocketPool account on X, and that post from X will be submitted to Rocket Fuel as well as the trading channel of the Discord.

How is the work being tested? Is testing included in the schedule?

N/A

How will the work be maintained after delivery?

Due to the nature of the work, the document is updated on the biweekly basis and does not really need maintained after each delivery. However, I am always open to adding more protocols and applications between updates if users reach out.

Costs

What is the acceptance criteria?

The Google document should be updated accurately biweekly and the thread on X and crossposting to the Discord should occur biweekly as well. This could be reviewed by the GMC at any time.

What is the proposed payment schedule for the grant? How much USD $ and over what period of time is the applicant requesting?

This grant will need to be re-established after a year. In the grant time frame, there will be 2 periods on which to pay out for, splitting the year into two 13 update periods. These period would have 13 updates, with $60 per update, totalling $780 per period.

Period 1 (11/08/24 - 05/08/25):

11/8, 11/22, 12/6, 12/20, 1/3, 1/17, 1/31, 2/14, 2/28, 3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 4/25

Period 2 (05/09/25 - 11/06/25):

5/9, 5/23, 6/6, 6/20, 7/4, 7/11, 8/1, 8/15, 8/29, 9/12, 9/26, 10/10, 10/24

Is the applicant requesting RPL or LUSD?

RPL

How will the GMC verify that the work delivered matches the proposed cadence?

They can follow the StakeRocketPool account on X, check out the Google Doc to see the updates, or watch in the Discord (specifically RF submissions and trading) to watch the cadence of work speed.

What alternatives or options have been considered in order to save costs for the proposed project?

Currently I am not aware of a way to cut costs. I am doing this by myself and the price is only based on labor and not on external tooling costs. However, automating the collection of data may make the labor decrease and subsequently decrease the costs. (I don’t have a solution for this at the moment but am looking into it)

Conflict of Interest

Does the person or persons proposing the grant have any conflicts of interest to disclose? (Please disclose here if you are a member of the GMC or if any member of the GMC would benefit directly financially from the grant).

I am not a member of the GMC nor would my profit benefit another member of the GMC.

Will the recipient of the grant, or any protocol or project in which the recipient has a vested interest (other than Rocket Pool), benefit financially if the grant is successful?

I am the an active executive member of my college’s cryptocurrency club but the club has no vested interest in Rocket Pool.

Let me know if there’s anything I’m missing or that would need changing. I’ve been a bit busy but will do my best to check in daily and render updates asap!

RP Team partnership (Patches) Part Deux

What is the work being proposed?

A continuation of the Round 11 Grant

Going forwards my focuses will be on

  • Continuing to improve code architecture to support automated testing
  • Continuing to add test coverage
  • Saturn 0/1/2
  • Onboarding more contributors as the developer experience improves.

Is there any related work this builds off of?

In the first 6 months, most progress was made in the following categories:

  1. CI
  • I’ve added CI jobs to smartnode.git which run tests and enforce style, as well as static analyses. These pay dividends when it comes to maintainability.
  • Added automated test coverage reports to smartnode
  • I’ve added some small and medium test frameworks and started improving coverage
  1. Treegen
  • v9 was developed and tested but not released as priorities shifted to working on smartnode v2.
  • In preparation for v10, thorough testing of v8 and v9 was added. Medium tests now validate that the code continues to produce the same merkle root for interval v20 as we did on mainnet. Additional tests to check various edge cases and behaviors (think- smoothing pool eligiblity and opt in time, bond reductions, etc) are under development and showing strong promise.
  1. Smart Node v2
  • Work to maintain and prepare v2 for release has been ongoing throughout.
  1. Code Review / Processes
  • Added contribution guidelines
  • Interfacing with other smart node maintainers to establish a cohesive set of processes and standards to improve smart node’s “developer experience”.
  • Focusing on code review heavily to improve code quality at merge time.

In total, so far, I have been paid $6,642 LUSD for this work, and I believe this represents a high ROI to the protocol. Obviously, the GMC should liaise with the core team to determine whether it is their opinion that I merit the cost.

Will the results of this project be entirely open source (MIT, GPL, Apache, CC BY license or similar)? If not, which parts will not be, why, and under what license will they be published?

Work

Who is doing the work?

@Patches

What is the background of the person(s) doing the work? What experience do they have with such projects in the past?

Same as original grant.

What is the breakdown of the proposed work, in terms of milestones and/or deadlines?

Same as original grant. I’m hoping to scale time up and down as needed, which realistically means “up” as Saturn 0/1/2 loom.

How is the work being tested? Is testing included in the schedule?

Frankly, most of the work IS testing. The work that isn’t testing is accompanied by work that tests it.

How will the work be maintained after delivery?

The changes to core repositories remain the responsibility of the core team to maintain long term.

Costs

What is the acceptance criteria?

Same as original grant.

What is the proposed payment schedule for the grant? How much USD $ and over what period of time is the applicant requesting?

October is the last month for which I can bill hours under the current grant. Should this grant be accepted, it will pay for November through April, inclusive. The first payment shall not be made prior to the expiry of the challenge period.

In the first 6 months of this arrangement (to date), my hours were as follows:

Month Hours
May 2024 18.5
June 2024 4
July 2024 19.5
August 2024 3.42
September 21
(Total to Date) 66.42

So, in total, $6,642 LUSD was paid to me for the work in the first six months. This number is quite low compared to the original maximum payout in the grant largely due to an unavoidable vacation travel binge.

I propose applying the same terms of the first 6 months to the subsequent ones, where I have a lighter schedule and intended to complete a lot more work.

Is the applicant requesting RPL or LUSD?

LUSD

How will the GMC verify that the work delivered matches the proposed cadence?

Verified by Langers monthly

What alternatives or options have been considered in order to save costs for the proposed project?

None to my knowledge. Staffing discussions for the core team are tangentially related, I suppose.

Conflict of Interest

Does the person or persons proposing the grant have any conflicts of interest to disclose? (Please disclose here if you are a member of the GMC or if any member of the GMC would benefit directly financially from the grant).

I am an investor in NodeSet and now Bitfly as well. I think I do a good job of wearing different hats and keeping the success of those investments cleanly independent from my work with Rocket Pool.

Rescue Node Feature: Quota usage visibility

What is the work being proposed?

The Rescue Node is currently missing an important feature. Basically, it is impossible to know how many times you have used it in the last 365 days, which is useful if you are trying to decide whether to use your last credit or tank some downtime instead.

I am proposing that rescue-api be extended to support queries (already done, in fact) and that the UI is updated to show a user their remaining quota.

Is there any related work this builds off of?

@Snocones already completed the API endpoint in this PR:

Solo stakers also benefit as users of the Rescue Node.

Work

Who is doing the work?

@Snocones

What is the background of the person(s) doing the work? What experience do they have with such projects in the past?

He’s a good egg.

(I can’t speak to his background beyond that he has already demonstrated sufficient technical ability via the above PR)

What is the breakdown of the proposed work, in terms of milestones and/or deadlines?

The remaining work is to update the UI to use the new API, and is the only milestone.

The API must also be updated to correct a poor design decision I bullied sno into, but it is a small tweak.

I reckon it should be completed within 2 months or I would consider it abandoned.

How is the work being tested? Is testing included in the schedule?

Largely by hand (on holesky)

How will the work be maintained after delivery?

The Rescue Node maintainers continue to maintain Rescue Node code.

Costs

What is the acceptance criteria?

The website https://rescuenode.com must be updated to query the new api endpoint.

For RP Node operators, this can be done when the signed message is pasted into the dialog box, with the results of the query formatted nicely and appearing between the text box and the “Request Access” button.

For solo node operators, this can be done after they sign the message and before they submit it.

After either operator type submits a signed message and receives a credential or an error, the data should be refreshed.

The messaging should take the form:

  • You have not used the Rescue Node in the past %d days. You have %d usages remaining.
  • You have used the Rescue Node %d times in the past %d days. You have %d usages remaining. Your next increase will be at %s(localized timestamp).

What is the proposed payment schedule for the grant? How much USD $ and over what period of time is the applicant requesting?

I think $750 is fair. Sno has been completing work relatively quickly for someone who professes to be inexperienced. He has also stated that it’s a learning experience for him. I suspect the hours he has spent so far to be between 5 and 15, and the additional work to take another 5 to 10.

Note that this payment covers work already completed as well as the rest of the work. I didn’t want to wait to file a retro, and I don’t want to file a bounty, as I want sno to finish the work.

Is the applicant requesting RPL or LUSD?

Either (sno’s preference)

How will the GMC verify that the work delivered matches the proposed cadence?

Check with the Rescue Node Maintainers / Patches

What alternatives or options have been considered in order to save costs for the proposed project?

I could have simply done this work myself. I chose to find a contributor to see if I could get someone interested in future collaboration. Paying the man might help with that.

Conflict of Interest

Does the person or persons proposing the grant have any conflicts of interest to disclose? (Please disclose here if you are a member of the GMC or if any member of the GMC would benefit directly financially from the grant).

Token Motion Design Subscription

What is the work being proposed?

Dedicated professional graphic design, branding and animation service for the Rocket Pool team (potentially), the GMC and the Rocket Pool community. The duration is 6 months guaranteed availability. See tokenmotion.io for full list of potential deliverables.

How this grant would work

  1. Rocket Pool (Team/GMC/Community) requests designs for x, y, z.
  2. Token Motion takes the requests, creates designs from them and delivers media files.
  3. Rocket Pool (Team/GMC/Community) publishes delivered designs.

Implementation

Regarding the implementation of a design service, I propose two options for the GMC to consider.

1. Community sourced requests

Rocket Fuel has a submissions channel where collective suggestions are placed (asynchronously) and @waqwaqattack processes and delivers them in a polished format. Similar to this, Token Motion could have a channel called ‘RP design requests’, where anyone in the community can request media and provide info they feel could add to the outreach and promotion of rocket pool products/community initiatives.

As part of the grant:

  • the RP community can request any designs they need.
  • the RP GMC can request any designs they need.
  • the RP team can request any designs they need.

If there are no requests queued at a particular time, Sleety would use his discretion (or poll #trading) to create materials that would be of general informational/educational value to Rocket Pool. Sleety has a history of these kinds of solutions, both voluntary (as a community member) and paid (tweet threads, RP team, related organizations).

2. Private Task Board

An alternative private task board (e.g. Trello) for the GMC/RP Team to curate. The benefits of this type of board is more targeted control on the creative output. While similar results could be achieved with the public Discord channel, there may be more noise in that approach vs. more signal/direction with control from the GMC/RP Team directly.

I don’t have a preferred method from a workflow perspective. The GMC should evaluate which approach would be most valuable. Happy to consider other options too!

One more thing…

With multiple requests, how do we prioritise them? Say the GMC requests an ad design, the community requests an explainer video and the team wants an announcement slide. What do?

A proposed solution:

If a queue forms, or I anticipate that future requests will require some input on prioritization, I can, in order:

  • work on the most time-sensitive request first
  • liaise with request creators to determine the highest priority artwork
  • create a 24-hour poll in Discord to let people decide which option gets prioritized

Disclaimer

It is important to communicate to the GMC that Token Motion is not a marketing agency or a copywriting service. We produce visual representations of written content. We do not have the capacity to research, strategize, produce bespoke written content for RP in the way a marketing/copy agency would. Our designs will of course contain written content (ad copy, explainer scripts, tweet threads, social media announcements etc) but we do not write the content, it needs to be provided to us. The Rocket Pool community is unique in that there is an opportunity for anyone to collaborate with us to create an amazing stream of media. Lots of great information is shared everyday in the RP Discord, we want Token Motion to be the conduit that takes this out of Discord and into the world in the same way that Rocket Fuel does, but for visuals.

We do not require micromanagement and will take initiative on less consequential decisions, but we design the visual side of things, the illustrations, the animations, the typography choices, the spacing, the color palette, the attractiveness and delightfulness of things - not the written content. We specialize in arranging pre-existing information, providing creative direction on information provided to us and delivering high quality visuals - graphics, branding, animations, webpage designs, marketing materials, ads, educational GIFs and video walkthroughs.

Is there any related work this builds off of?

Not exactly related but we have done some paid work for the RP team (website illustrations, conference media), received a prior grant from the GMC for tweet thread and have consistently contributed media to the RP community (for free).

Will the results of this project be entirely open source (MIT, GPL, Apache, CC BY license or similar)? If not, which parts will not be, why, and under what license will they be published?

By default, designs will be CC BY, unless a design requires something different (e.g. logo or using another org’s logo for co-marketing)

Benefit

I’ve added a few potential design deliverables to each group - but ultimately the direction and focus of what gets produced would be GMC/Team/community led.

Group Benefits
Potential rETH holders If the grant is successfully completed, how does this help people looking to stake ETH for rETH? Engaging visuals to help attract potential rETH holders. Maybe a series of walkthroughs on minting via RP website/buying rETH on selected secondary markets. Maybe an animated explainer on the Deposit pool mechanism. Maybe infographics on the decentralization of rETH compared to other LSTs.
rETH holders If the grant is successfully completed, how does this help rETH holders? Infographics on rETH supply stats, commission explainers, maybe a ui for yield calculation.
Potential NOs Lots of NO’s required, could benefit from onboarding explainers, visual aids in the official documentation, community enticement through sharing user experience videos.
NOs If the grant is successfully completed, how does this help people already running a Rocket Pool node? Could make ui design improvements, explain upgrades via visuals, demonstrate features, help series.
Community If the grant is successfully completed, how does this help the Rocket Pool community? Community gets a voice in the creation of media. Can crowd source effective visuals from other protocols and replicate for RP, offer an opportunity for big brains to have their writing enhanced with professional tier graphics. Could raise the collective presentation of community research. Could help brand important GMC funded projects.
RPL holders If the grant is successfully completed, how does this help RPL holders? RPL holders may benefit from educational content on Defi integrations, TAX explainers, tweet threads on RPL utility post-Saturn, constant stream of visual media to retain confidence in token, etc.

Which other non-RPL protocols, DAOs, projects, or individuals, would stand to benefit from this grant?

I believe that in an effort to explain the value proposition of Rocket Pool, we educate the wider crypto community on the mechanisms of Ethereum staking, the value of decentralization and the importance of a home staker community (like Rocket Pool).

Work

Who is doing the work?

Token Motion / @sleety . Token Motion is a two-person design studio based in the UK. I (Sleety) will complete the majority of the digital design work.

What is the background of the person(s) doing the work? What experience do they have with such projects in the past?

@sleety - Graphic Designer / Animator for 12+ years and I been an active member of Rocket Pool community since April 2021. Proficient in Adobe Suite, Cinema4D and Figma. Main skillsets are graphic design, illustration, typography, animation, video, branding, web design. Also memery.

What is the breakdown of the proposed work, in terms of milestones and/or deadlines?

In terms of Milestones, I am happy to review performance at the end/beginning of each GMC period, with the deliverable being a quick PDF containing all media produced in the month for Rocket Pool - for GMC appraisal and accountability.

The ideal scenario is a continuous stream of design requests from all RP stakeholders for the duration of the grant. If quiet periods were to arise, Sleety would use his discretion to create materials that would be of general informational/educational value to Rocket Pool. Or Token Motion’s service would be fully available to the RP Team for internal, B2B, branding, co-marketing etc.

How will the work be maintained after delivery?

The deliverables will be media files (.png, .svg, .gif, .mp4, etc). Token Motion will deliver them as zip files. The files should to be published by person(s) with login credentials/authority to various social media outlets (discord, youtube, twitter, website, website docs).

Costs

What is the acceptance criteria?

A regular stream of high quality visual media produced by Token Motion.

What is the proposed payment schedule for the grant? How much USD $ and over what period of time is the applicant requesting?

Requesting $29,970 LUSD which secures a 6 months subscription to Token Motion’s dedicated design services. This translates to 12.5 hours per week (see below) dedicated to providing solutions to design problems in areas such as marketing/advertising, education, awareness and engagement.

While we don’t price explicitly on an hourly rate, it may be helpful to give an approximated example of value.

Rate for short term clients: $120/hr
12.5 hrs/wk * $120/hr = $1,500/wk * 4 (weeks in month)
 = $6000/mo

Rate for long term clients: $100/hr
12.5 hrs/wk * $100/hr = $1,250/wk * 4 (weeks in month)
 = $5000/mo

This calculation takes into account 4 weeks (20 workdays) + 8 UK public holidays of the year for holiday/breaks. Our calendar can be found here.

Is the applicant requesting RPL or LUSD?

LUSD

How will the GMC verify that the work delivered matches the proposed cadence?

The output of all design work (except for sensitive work, new releases, co-marketing announcements etc.) will be documented in the design channel and in the monthly round-up PDF.

What alternatives or options have been considered in order to save costs for the proposed project?

Working for the RP Team/GMC/community individually is feasible, but less cost effective. This approach allows all RP stakeholders to be involved. In addition, a long term commitment to Token Motion services saves the GMC a total of $6,000 ($29,970 vs. $35,970)

Incentives Grant for AlphaGrowth

What is the work being proposed?

AlphaGrowth seeks a grant of 4,000 RPL for incentives on growth campaigns. As the recipient of a GMC grant, we’re responsible for running the Growth Program for Rocket Pool. To streamline our efforts, we request incentives to secure deals with protocols, chains, DAOs, and bridges on behalf of the DAO. This will enable us to work more efficiently and effectively without involving the IMC or pDAO.

Is there any related work this builds off of?

Yes, the proposed grant will enable AlphaGrowth to manage and expand the Growth Program.

Will the results of this project be entirely open source

Benefit

Group Benefits
Potential rETH holders Our Incentives Program will directly contribute to providing DeFi utility to rETH. Providing these incentives will create demand for rETH and have users deposit ETH into Rocket Pool’s Deposit Pool
rETH Holders rETH holders will be able to enjoy more DeFi optionality with their token to allow them to do more with their rETH token
Potential NO The incentives aim to expand the Rocket Pool network by attracting DeFi utility to rETH creating demand for rETH. The demand for rETH will cause more ETH to flow into the Deposit Pool, directly supporting Rocket Pool’s mission to enhance Ethereum’s decentralization.

RPL

How will the GMC verify that the work delivered matches the proposed cadence?

The GMC will track the funds on-chain.

What alternatives or options have been considered in order to save costs for the proposed project?

The alternative paths are submitting an on-chain proposal directly to the pDAO or via the IMC. By working through the IMC, there are DeFi strategies that can’t be funded due to the IMC Charter. This allows for greater DeFi flexibility.

Notice: This message marks the closing of the eighteenth (18) round of Rocket Pool grant applications. Any applications submitted after this will not be considered for this round. The GMC will announce the award recipients in a new thread here on the forums around December 1st. Since the last Sunday falls on the 24th (early in the month), we would have had reduced time to make decisions. Additionally, the new committee roster is being onboarded just days after applications open, leaving little time for the committees to meet and plan their decisions effectively. The award decision will now be announced on December 1st instead of the usual window between the 24th and 31st.

The community will then have two weeks to issue any challenges before funds are disbursed. Thank you to all who applied and thank you to everyone who has followed along. Anyone who would like to comment on existing applications is encouraged to do so in this thread.
